A film that deserves to be experienced on the biggest screen and with the loudest speakers. Tenet is the example of a master filmmaker taking one of his favorite genres (if not his favorite one) and merging it with his own style and obsessions. I think in this particular project Nolan let himself have fun with the concept of his film instead of trying to create something that matches the seer originality of Inception. It's more of him working on a genre (the spy genre) and putting his own spin to it instead of trying to re-invent it like he did with the war genre in Dunkirk. The characters don't really have the depth of Cobb or Cooper and the film cares more in being an action heavy espionage thriller with a sci-fi twist (a great spectacle) instead of trying to combine the powerful emotional cores other Nolan films have. Tenet has some really ambitious ideas but it doesn't execute them in an equally ambitious way but rather presents us with a very simple story that acts as the parallel for the film's existential themes. I also hoped that there would be an escalation after the reveal of who John David's character is fighting in an iconic scene (similarly to how they went from 2 dream levels to 3 in Inception) but I didn't feel the film built to something that brilliant again after that. I loved Pattinson's role even though his character wasn't particularly rich and the reveal at the end was strong and it kinda worked as the film's emotional payoff. Not as good as the payoff of Inception (Cobb returning home) Interstellar (Cooper is the ghost) or Dunkirk (the 3 timelines perfectly converging and coming to an end) but pretty good writing that really completed the puzzle that was there from the beginning. I think Nolan wanted to make his own action epic espionage thriller in a way that it resembles his style and in the end he did just that. Is it as good as most of his films? No. Is it confusing? Hell yeah it is. But it is well made, brilliantly shot with Hoyte's cinematography being exceptional as always and it also is a very ambitious film that has its moments of brilliance and awe. I can see many people (passionate film scholars and writers) being inspired by Tenet's gradiosity without necessarily being one of Nolan's best films. It doesn't have to pecially with a filmography like his. In the end, there are no loosens when the credits role. There are ambiguities sure but they are well constructed (not as well as that spinning top in Inception though. There are problems one could have after watching Tenet but its energy and great craftsmanship prevent it from falling apart. What Sergio Leone did with "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Once Upon a Time in the West" for the western, Nolan did with Tenet for the spy genre. It's his love letter to action, espionage thrillers but on his own epic and mind bending terms.
